What is ADHD?
Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common disorders affecting children. Symptoms of ADHD include inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. ADHD is usually identified in school-aged children when it leads to disruption in the classroom or problems with schoolwork.
ADHD affects a significant part of the population and causes considerable behavioural problems, learning limitations in the context of the formal education system and increased chances for social exclusion.
Current treatment approaches mean high costs to welfare systems and individuals, while the widespread usage of stimulant medication remains a subject of controversy due to undesirable side-effects.
What is FocusLocus?
FocusLocus is an EU H2020 Innovation Action project that brings together a multidisciplinary Consortium of partners aspiring to develop a highly disruptive and innovative gamified intervention programme for assisting children to manage and overcome the ADHD symptoms.
The FocusLocus gamified intervention programme relies on cognitive training methods for mental and motor skill acquisition and behavioural change, adopting the concept of asset management as the main instrument of gamification. FocusLocus is designed to be highly personalised and adaptive to each child’s individual condition, symptoms, age and character.
By introducing advanced performance analytics and remote monitoring features, FocusLocus actively involves all intermediaries associated with children with ADHD (parents, clinicians and special needs educators), allowing them to perform any necessary adaptations to the scheduled intervention programme.
How is FocusLocus implemented?
FocusLocus is delivered through a multifaceted and adaptive gaming experience that permeates the child’s daily life and activities and spans across virtual and physical space.
The FocusLocus intervention will be bifold; a Virtual World Management (VWM) game mode will become available to individual users for home use, accessible through mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets. At the same time, a Multisensory Mixed Reality (MMR) game mode will become available to relevant facilities (clinics, treatment centres and Special Needs Education schools) for supervised gamified interventions. The MMR game mode will rely on more sophisticated equipment offering immersive gaming experiences featuring Augmented Reality technology as well as tangible and natural user interaction. Both game modes employ Electro- encephalography (EEG) wearable headset equipment for the operation of in-game neurofeedback mechanisms.
The FocusLocus partners are now working towards the pilot deployment 2018 preparation activities.
